While usually I use this as an outlet for my complaints and to talk about TV shows that nobody wants to listen to me talk about, I occasionally like to take to my blog to create a greater understanding of how I believe the human race, as a species, should act and evolve. It is my civic duty to point out when all of you are being annoying and how to correct this behavior, and today I would like to focus in on a category of people who I describe as belonging to the Shit Girls Say genre because they say things that came directly out of the Shit Girls Say videos. When I take a look at these girls, it suddenly becomes glaringly obvious why it took America so long to let us vote.
As a self-described special snowflake who suffers from both unrealistically high levels of self esteem and crippling amounts of self doubt, I am here to set all of you typical white girls straight. If you find yourself using LOL (not ironically) in your twenties, identifying with characters from Lifetime movies, or spending a significant amount of your time talking and thinking about how hot Adam Levine is, this is for you.
- “I’m not like other girls.” This is probably the number one thing females can say to offend me as another female. If the reason you’re not like other girls is because you play video games, enjoy watching sports in a team jersey you bought at Victoria’s Secret, or hate shopping, wearing heels, and putting on make-up, I’m sorry, but you are actually not that different. Girls who say this are, in fact, like other girls because almost every single girl I know has said this at some point or another. However, if the reason you’re not like other girls is because you’re secretly a unicorn, then this is acceptable.
- Blaming everything on your period. In high school, I had a friend who legitimately stayed home a week every single month because her period was THAT bad… or maybe it was because she was THAT whiny. Never in my life have I skipped school, work, or anything else because of a natural process that has happened to me every month since I was thirteen. Come on, guys: you know the drill. Pop a few advil, wear dark jeans, and move on with your day. It’s also not an excuse to treat everyone around you like crap. Believe it or not, even while you are shedding your uterine lining, you are in complete control of your words and your actions. You might not have realized this because you were too busy crying about how fat you look while shoveling ice cream in your mouth, but that doesn’t make it any less true. You will have cramps and be irrationally emotional for a few days, and that sucks, but imagine how irrationally emotional you would be if instead of changing your tampon you were changing a diaper.
- “I need a facial/spa day/mani-pedi!” No, you don’t. I like to live by the words of one of my favorite beet farmers, Dwight K. Schrute, who refuses to pay people for things he can do himself. Need a facial? Wash your face. And is it just me being socially stunted, or are most beauty treatments you pay for horribly awkward to live through? I feel incredibly weird getting haircuts and could not imagine what a nightmare it would be to take my clothes off and lie on a strange table so someone I’ve never met before could massage me. To me, this sounds like a service I should be paid for doing, not the masseuse. It is nice to get your nails done, but it is much more fulfilling for me to do my own nails every week and proudly present them for my Instagram audience to enjoy/provide me with validation in being a person. And do not get me started on the concept of retail therapy.
- “I prefer to be friends with guys. Girls just don’t like me.” Most of the time, if you’re a girl who can’t keep female friends but finds herself with loads of guy friends, I guarantee those guys are not hanging out with you for your easygoing personality. There is a very specific reason that girls don’t like you, and it’s probably because you are constantly hanging all over their boyfriends and crushes in the name of “friendship.” I believe that in order to be a good person, you need to also be able to be a good friend, and as a female, this includes girl code. Learn it, love it, live by it. Be the NICE girl. I am sick of holding down the fort alone.
- “I hate drama!” You LOVE drama. Why else do you post vague Facebook statuses begging for attention every five minutes? Those who feel the need to proclaim how much they hate drama are usually the people who bring it on themselves. Here’s an idea: instead of tweeting 19 times in a row about a problem that you’d like to complain incessantly about but still you “don’t want to talk about it,” just shut up. You don’t have to see the dawn of each day as a brand new episode of Laguna Beach, starring you. It’s actually okay to act like you have some sense of common decency if no one tells you directly that you should.
- Girls who wear sweats… and a full face of make-up. So you show up to class in your best yoga pants tucked into your Uggs and $70 rhinestone studded hoodie for what purpose? To make us all think that you’re headed to the gym after you finish downing that 800 calorie Frappucino or what? You’re not fooling anybody, in part due to the mass amounts of eyeliner you’re wearing. If you’re going to dress down for the day, you need to commit – greasy hair in a ponytail, dark bags under your eyes, etc. And in case you didn’t get the memo, Justin Bieber said he is not attracted to girls who wear Ugg boots, so I’m not sure why they’re even still on the market.
- Being too feminist. Part of being a ~feminist is accepting other women, even if they choose to “act like a woman.” Those of you who are constantly giving Taylor Swift flack for singing about her relationships (newsflash, literally every song in history except this one is about love), wearing dresses all the time, and talking openly in interviews about how excited she is to have kids one day, this one goes out to you. You know what, I hate pants. I don’t keep that a secret. I think pants are unflattering and (when it’s the right style for your body type) dresses look great on anyone. Dresses are fun to wear, especially when the hemline floats up and twirls when you do. I also love the color pink, baking cookies, and Disney princesses. I’m still a smart, informed, functioning member of society. And so is Taylor Swift, who is a more successful businesswoman than you will ever be. Neither of us is setting women’s rights back by talking about how cute kittens are.
- Being in love with Ryan Gosling. Okay, I get it. He’s cute. He said he was in a relationship with Disneyland. How endearing! However, I would like it if America could accept there are other celebrity guys out there to be in love with other than Ryan or Channing Tatum (whose best role, I still maintain, was in She’s the Man. God, Amanda Bynes, why did you have to turn out to be certifiably nuts?).
That said, while you are looking for a new celebrity crush, please keep in mind that John Krasinksi is not an option. :)
Seriously can we be best friends? The whole “I’m not like other girls” thing is SUV a huge pet peeve of mine. Honestly though no you’re right you aren’t like other girls because you’re you not them. There is nothing that a “normal” girl is. Some of us are nice girls, some of us are sluts, and everything in between.
